How we help

Cross-Border Tax Filing for the Fashion Industry

Expanding into global markets presents exciting opportunities for fashion brands, but also complex tax and reporting obligations. US UK Tax Experts specialise in cross-border tax filing for the fashion industry, preparing the returns that designers, retailers, and luxury labels need for their international operations while staying fully compliant with HMRC and IRS regulations.

Our international tax specialists for the fashion industry prepare the filings that global manufacturing, distribution, and retail activities require. We handle transfer pricing reporting, VAT and sales tax compliance, and the reporting of royalty and intellectual property income, so that income from your creative assets is reported correctly in both countries.

Whether your brand sells online to international customers or operates stores and showrooms in multiple countries, US UK Tax Experts have the expertise needed to file accurately in each one. We claim the reliefs and credits each return allows and make sure the same income is not taxed twice, so fashion businesses can grow without the stress of complex international regulations.

Questions this sector asks first

The general position on each. What applies to you depends on where you live, where the work is done and who pays.

When its sales into a state pass that state's threshold, commonly $100,000 in a year, or when it holds stock there. Storing inventory in a US warehouse or fulfilment centre creates a presence in that state from the first sale. Each state has its own registration, rates and return.

Not automatically. Under the treaty a UK company's profits are taxed in the US only if it has a permanent establishment there, such as an office, a showroom or an agent who habitually concludes contracts. A company relying on the treaty may still need to file a protective return disclosing that position.

Royalties paid by a US licensee to a UK brand are generally exempt from US withholding under the treaty once the payer holds a Form W-8BEN-E. Without it, 30% is withheld. The royalty income is then reported in the UK company's tax return.

Stock is valued at the lower of cost and what it can realistically be sold for, which matters in fashion because past-season stock loses value quickly. Write-downs reduce taxable profit when they are properly evidenced. US and UK rules differ on method, so a group reporting in both countries reconciles the two.
