What we handle for you
The filings this sector needs most, on both sides of the Atlantic.
Questions this sector asks first
The general position on each. What applies to you depends on where you live, where the work is done and who pays.
No. The VAT Retail Export Scheme, which let visitors reclaim VAT on goods bought in store, ended in Great Britain in January 2021. Goods are only free of UK VAT when the retailer exports them directly to an address abroad and holds evidence of export.
A state can require the retailer to register and collect sales tax once sales into that state pass its threshold, commonly $100,000 a year, even with no presence there. A boutique, concession or stock held in a state creates the obligation immediately. Returns are filed state by state.
The US company files its own federal and state returns. The UK parent includes the investment in its accounts, reports transactions with the subsidiary on arm's length terms, and dividends coming back are generally exempt from UK corporation tax. Reduced treaty rates on those dividends are claimed on a Form W-8BEN-E.
Import duty is a cost of the goods and is not recoverable. Import VAT is recoverable by a VAT-registered business, usually through postponed VAT accounting, where it is declared and reclaimed on the same VAT return rather than paid at the border.
