US and UK Tax Accountants for Interior Designers

As specialized accountants for interior designers and design firms, we understand the unique accounting and tax challenges of the design industry.

How we help

Accounting Solutions for Design Professionals

Interior designers work on project-based fees, often managing multiple client projects simultaneously with varying payment terms and design specifications. Proper accounting is essential for tracking profitability.

We handle project accounting for design firms, prepare VAT returns on design services, and keep records of billable hours and supplier costs. For designers with international clients, we report the income from cross-border design contracts on the right return.

Our team keeps your design business's records accurate and claims the reliefs you are entitled to on each return.

Accounts and Tax Returns for Design Practices

Interior designers run multiple client projects simultaneously with varying payment terms and design specifications. Accurate bookkeeping is essential for correct tax returns and compliance.

We prepare project accounts and tax returns for design firms, from recording billable hours and supplier costs to filing VAT returns on design services and claiming allowable business expenses on the return.

Our team prepares accurate accounts and returns for design practices, claiming the deductions you are entitled to and making sure every revenue stream and expense category is reported correctly.

International Tax Filing for Global Designers

Expanding your design practice internationally creates unique tax and reporting obligations across multiple jurisdictions. Meeting them requires accurate, timely filing and deep cross-border expertise.

We prepare and file the tax returns for interior designers working internationally, covering cross-border client projects, overseas supplier payments, global design contracts and international income streams, ensuring compliance with both US and UK tax authorities.

Our tax accountants claim foreign tax credits and treaty relief on the right return, so the same income is not taxed twice, and keep your reporting consistent across all territories where you operate and earn income.

Questions this sector asks first

The general position on each. What applies to you depends on where you live, where the work is done and who pays.

It depends on what the work relates to. Design services tied to a specific property are taxed where the property is, so work on a UK home carries UK VAT wherever the client lives, and work on a US property does not. General design work for a business client abroad is outside the scope of UK VAT.

Income is reported as it is earned over the life of the project, not only when the final invoice is paid, unless you use the cash basis. Deposits and stage payments need matching to the work done. US citizens report the same income on a calendar-year US return, which rarely lines up with the UK tax year.

If you buy and resell the goods you charge VAT on the full selling price and recover the VAT you paid. If you arrange the purchase purely as the client's agent, only your fee is your income. The paperwork has to show which it is, because the VAT return is different in each case.

A UK Self Assessment return on your design income, and a US return on the same income because the US taxes its citizens wherever they live. UK tax is claimed as a foreign tax credit, UK National Insurance covers you in place of US self-employment tax, and UK bank accounts over the $10,000 combined threshold need an FBAR.
