US and UK Tax Accountants for Theatre Productions
Supporting theatre productions, West End shows, and theatrical organizations with specialist accounting and tax services designed for the unique financial structure of theatre.
Theatre Industry Financial Specialists
Theatre productions involve complex financial structures with investors, producers, cast, and crew. Managing the finances of a theatrical venture while navigating UK tax law and potential international complications requires dedicated expertise.
From West End productions to regional theatre, we understand the financial cycles of theatre-preview periods, limited runs, touring, and repertory seasons-and how these affect tax obligations.
We account for funding, grants, donations, and box office income for theatre organisations and prepare the tax returns that go with them.

What the sector looks like right now, and why cross-border position matters more than it used to.

Tax Filing for Theatre Productions and Companies
Theatre productions involve complex financial arrangements with multiple stakeholders, from investors and producers to cast and crew. Accurate accounts and correct filing are essential for compliance.
We prepare production accounts and tax returns for theatre organisations, claiming UK theatre tax relief in the company tax return, reporting investor returns, and ensuring compliance with both US and UK regulations, including the reporting of charitable donations.
Our team prepares accurate accounts and returns for theatre productions, claiming the deductions you are entitled to and making sure every revenue stream and expense category is reported correctly.

International Tax Filing for Global Productions
Expanding theatre productions internationally creates unique tax and reporting obligations across multiple jurisdictions. Meeting them requires accurate, timely filing and deep cross-border expertise.
We prepare and file the tax returns for theatre organisations working internationally, reporting income from touring productions and co-productions, overseas funding and payments to artists engaged across borders, ensuring compliance with both US and UK tax authorities.
Our tax accountants claim foreign tax credits and treaty relief on the right return, so the same income is not taxed twice, and keep reporting consistent across all territories involved in your productions.
What we handle for you
The filings this sector needs most, on both sides of the Atlantic.
Questions this sector asks first
The general position on each. What applies to you depends on where you live, where the work is done and who pays.
Theatre tax relief is claimed by the production company in its company tax return, with a separate calculation for each production. The company must be responsible for producing and running the show, and the claim covers qualifying costs of creating and closing it rather than the ordinary running costs of each performance.
Money returned to investors is first a repayment of what they put in, and only the surplus is taxable profit. The production reports what it paid, and each investor reports their share on their own return. US investors in a UK production report it on their US return as well, with UK tax claimed as a credit.
The US taxes income from performances given there. Payments to foreign performers and companies are subject to 30% withholding unless a Central Withholding Agreement is agreed beforehand, and a US return is then filed to settle the tax on the actual profit. States on the tour route can require their own filings.
Usually at the standard rate, but admission to performances put on by an eligible non-profit body or a public authority can be exempt under the cultural exemption. Exempt income restricts how much VAT the organisation can recover on its costs, so the VAT return has to split costs between the two.
